Land of Lakes and Volcanoes

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Nicaragua is often referred to as the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes." Lakes Managua and Nicaragua are both impressively large. Lake Nicaragua is also home to the world's only fresh water sharks! This map shows the locations of a string of 12 volcanoes that run parallel to the pacific coast line. Of these 12, 6 are still active, 5 are dormant, and 1 is extinct. Several of the dormant volcanoes are now large craters that are filled with water where you can swim.
