Berta is 24 and lives at House of Hope. Berta has a less than desirable history, as her sister sold her into sexual slavery at a young age. As you can imagine, over time, this kind of lifestyle can cause one’s heart to be hardened against people, and that is exactly what happened with Berta. However, God provided a way out for her and she now resides at House of Hope, is in the 8th grade, and has been volunteering at our children’s services each week since we started last May.
A few weeks ago, Berta noticed a couple of kids who come each Saturday morning who obviously worked on the streets. They were filthy, and they had wet themselves. Berta’s heart broke for them and she could not get them out of her mind. Though Berta does not have much, she went home, searched through what she had and found some shampoo samples. She found some clean and currently unused clothes at House of Hope and came prepared to open her heart to these precious kids and to serve them. The next Saturday, she found them, took them into the bathroom and washed their hair in the sink with the shampoo. She tried to help them get as much lice out as she could. And she gave them new clothes to wear.
What a perfect picture of what Christ did for us! And what a perfect example of how now we should live. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and then asked us to go and do the same. I’m thankful that Berta was obedient to the call of Christ and gave of herself even though others might say that she did not have much to give.
