This past Sunday was a national holiday celebrating the patron saint of Nicaragua, Santo Domingo or Minguito (which is his nickname). The holiday actually starts on the 1st of August when a small statue, a little less than a foot and a half tall, is carried from a small church in Santo Domingo Nicaragua all the way to the downtown cathedral in Managua. Many places shut down as Nicaraguans dress up and pay homage to and make vows to Minguito. Many streets were closed, and the US Embassy advised people to stay away from crowded areas due to alcohol.
